आदि गुरू शंकराचार्य का जन्म केरल के कालडी़ नामक ग्राम में हुआ था। वह अपने ब्राह्मण माता-पिता के एकमात्र सन्तान थे। बचपन में ही उनके पिता का देहान्त हो गया। शंकर की रुचि आरम्भ से ही सन्यास की तरफ थी। अल्पायु में ही आग्रह करके माता से सन्यास की अनुमति लेकर गुरु की खोज में निकल पडे।। वेदान्त के गुरु गोविन्द पाद से ज्ञान प्राप्त करने के बाद सारे देश का भ्रमण किया। मिथिला के प्रमुख विद्वान मण्डन मिश्र को शास्त्रार्थ में हराया। परन्तुं मण्डन मिश्र की पत्नी भारती के द्वारा पराजित हुए। दुबारा फिर रति विज्ञान में पारंगत होकर भारती को पराजित किया।
उन्होनें तत्कालीन भारत में व्याप्त धार्मिक कुरीतियों को दूर कर अद्वैत वेदान्त की ज्योति से देश को आलोकित किया। सनातन धर्म की रक्षा हेतु उन्होंने भारत में चारों दिशाओं में चार मठों की स्थापना की तथा शंकराचार्य पद की स्थापना करके उस पर अपने चार प्रमुख शिष्यों को आसीन किया। उत्तर में ज्योतिर्मठ, दक्षिण में श्रन्गेरी, पूर्व में गोवर्धन तथा पश्चिम में शारदा मठ नाम से देश में चार धामों की स्थापना की। ३२ साल की अल्पायु में पवित्र केदार नाथ धाम में शरीर त्याग दिया। सारे देश में शंकराचार्य को सम्मान सहित आदि गुरु के नाम से जाना जाता है।

*शंकराचार्य के विषय में कहा गया है-*
*अष्टवर्षेचतुर्वेदी, द्वादशेसर्वशास्त्रवित् षोडशेकृतवान्भाष्यम्द्वात्रिंशेमुनिरभ्यगात्*
अर्थात् आठ वर्ष की आयु में चारों वेदों में निष्णात हो गए, बारह वर्ष की आयु में सभी शास्त्रों में पारंगत, सोलह वर्ष की आयु में शांकरभाष्यतथा बत्तीस वर्ष की आयु में शरीर त्याग दिया। ब्रह्मसूत्र के ऊपर शांकरभाष्यकी रचना कर विश्व को एक सूत्र में बांधने का प्रयास भी शंकराचार्य के द्वारा किया गया है।
जिस समय इस देश में आद्य शंकराचार्यजी का आविर्भाव हुआ था उस समय असामाजिक तत्त्व अनीति, शोषण, भ्रम तथा अनाचार के द्वारा समाज को गलत दिशा में ले जा रहे थे । समाज में फैली इस अव्यवस्था को देखकर बालक शंकर का हृदय काँप उठा । उसने प्रतिज्ञा की कि ‘मैं राष्ट्र के धर्मोद्धार के लिए अपने सुख की तिलांजलि देता हूँ । अपने श्रम और ज्ञान की शक्ति से राष्ट्र की आध्यात्मिक शक्तियों को जागृत करूँगा । चाहे उसके लिए मुझे सारा जीवन साधना में लगाना पड़े, घर छोड़ना पड़े अथवा घोर-से-घोर कष्ट सहने पड़ें, मैं सदैव तैयार रहूँगा ।’
बालक शंकर माँ से आज्ञा लेकर चल पड़े अपने संकल्प को साधने । उन्होंने सद्गुरु स्वामी गोविंदपादाचार्यजी से दीक्षा ली । इसके बाद वे साधना एवं वेद-शास्त्रों के गहन अध्ययन से अपने ज्ञान को परिपक्व कर बालक शंकर से जगद्गुरु आद्य शंकराचार्य बन गये । शंकराचार्यजी अपने गुरुदेव से आशीर्वाद प्राप्त कर देश में वेदांत का प्रचार करने चल पड़े । भगवान श्रीराम, श्रीकृष्ण जैसों को भी दुष्टों के उत्पीड़न सहने पड़े तो आचार्य उससे कैसे बच पाते ? शंकराचार्यजी के धर्मकार्य में विधर्मी हर प्रकार से रुकावट डालने का प्रयास करने लगे, कई बार उन पर मर्मांतक प्रहार भी किये गये ।
कपटवेशधारी उग्रभैरव नामक एक दुष्ट व्यक्ति ने आचार्य की हत्या के लिए शिष्यत्व ग्रहण किया । आचार्य को मारने की उसकी साजिश विफल हुई और अंततः वह भगवान नृसिंह के प्रवेश अवतार द्वारा मारा गया ।
कर्नाटक में बसनेवाली कापालिक जाति का मुखिया था क्रकच । वह मांस-शराब आदि अनेक दुराचारों में लिप्त था । कर्नाटक की जनता उसके अत्याचारों से त्रस्त थी । आचार्य शंकर के दर्शन, सत्संग एवं सान्निध्य के प्रभाव से लोग कापालिकों द्वारा प्रसारित दुर्गुणों को छोड़ने लगे और शुद्ध, सात्त्विक जीवन की ओर आकृष्ट होने लगे । सैकड़ों कापालिक भी मांस-शराब को छोड़कर शंकराचार्यजी के शिष्य बन गये । इस पर क्रकच घबराया । उसने शंकराचार्यजी का अपमान किया, गालियाँ दीं और वहाँ से भाग जाने को कहा । शंकराचार्यजी ने उसके विरोध की कोई परवाह नहीं की और अपनी संस्कृति का, अपने धर्म का प्रचार-प्रसार निष्ठापूर्वक करते रहे । इस पर क्रकच ने उन्हें मार डालने की धमकी दी । उसने बहुत-से दुष्ट शिष्यों को शराब पिलाकर शंकराचार्यजी को मारने हेतु भेजा । धर्मनिष्ठ राजा सुधन्वा को जब इस बात का पता चला तो उन्होंने अपनी सेना को भेजा और युद्ध में सारे कापालिकों को मार गिराया ।
अभिनव गुप्त भी एक ऐसा ही महामूर्ख था जो आचार्य के लोक-जागरण के कार्यों को बंद कराना चाहता था । वह भी अपने शिष्योंसहित आचार्य से पराजित हुआ । वह दुराभिमानी, प्रतिक्रियावादी, ईर्ष्यालु स्वभाव का था । वह आचार्य के प्रति षड्यंत्र करने लगा । दैवयोग से उसे भगंदर का रोग हो गया और कुछ ही दिनों बाद उसकी मृत्यु हो गयी ।
इस संसार में ईर्ष्या और द्वेषवश जिसने भी महापुरुषों का अनिष्ट करना चाहा, देर-सवेर दैवी विधान से उन्हींका अनिष्ट हो जाता है । संतों-महापुरुषों की निंदा करना, उनके दैवी कार्य में विघ्न डालना यानी खुद ही अपने अनिष्ट को आमंत्रित करना है । उग्रभैरव, क्रकच व अभिनव गुप्त का जीवन इसका प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण है ।
आज भी कई सच्चे महापुरुष है उन्होंने सनातन संस्कृति की रक्षा करके समाज को जगाने का कार्य किया, लेकिन उनके ऊपर षडयंत्र करके जेल भिजवा दिया गया ।
इस संसार में सज्जनों, सत्पुरुषों और संतों को जितना सहन करना पड़ता है उतना दुष्टों को नहीं। ऐसा मालूम होता है कि इस संसार ने सत्य और सत्त्व को संघर्ष में लाने का मानो ठेका ले रखा है। यदि ऐसा न होता तो मीरा को जहर नही दिया जाता, उड़िया बाबा की हत्या नही की जाती, दयानन्द को जहर न दिया जाता और लिंकन व कैनेडी की हत्या न होती।
इस संसार का कोई विचित्र रवैया है, रिवाज प्रतीत होता है कि इसका अज्ञान-अँधकार मिटाने के लिए जो अपने आपको जलाकर प्रकाश देता है, संसार की आँधियाँ उस प्रकाश को बुझाने के लिए दौड़ पड़ती हैं। टीका, टिप्पणी, निन्दा, गलच चर्चाएँ और अन्यायी व्यवहार की आँधी चारों ओर से उस पर टूट पड़ती है।
समाज जब किसी ज्ञानी संतपुरुष का शरण, सहारा लेने लगता है तब राष्ट्र, धर्म व संस्कृति को नष्ट करने के कुत्सित कार्यों में संलग्न असामाजिक तत्त्वों को अपने षडयन्त्रों का भंडाफोड़ हो जाने का एवं अपना अस्तित्व खतरे में पड़ने का भय होने लगता है, परिणामस्वरूप अपने कुकर्मों पर पर्दा डालने के लिए वे उस दीये को ही बुझाने के लिए नफरत, निन्दा, कुप्रचार, असत्य, अमर्यादित व अनर्गल आक्षेपों व टीका-टिप्पणियों की आँधियों को अपने हाथों में लेकर दौड़ पड़ते हैं, जो समाज में व्याप्त अज्ञानांधकार को नष्ट करने के लिए महापुरुषों द्वारा प्रज्जवलित हुआ था।
ये असामाजिक तत्त्व अपने विभिन्न षडयन्त्रों द्वारा संतों व महापुरुषों के भक्तों व सेवकों को भी गुमराह करने की कुचेष्टा करते हैं। समझदार लोग उनके षडयंत्रजाल में नहीं फँसते, महापुरुषों के दिव्य जीवन के प्रतिपल से परिचित उनके अनुयायी कभी भटकते नहीं, पथ से विचलित होते नहीं अपितु सश्रद्ध होकर उनके निष्काम सेवाकार्यों में अत्यधिक सक्रिय व गतिशील होकर सहभागी हो जाते हैं ।
